6 Photography Pullbacks That Will Blow Your Mind

Beauty is everywhere! Even when it’s not.

Do you ever get jealous of all these amazing photographers with all their amazing locations?

I know I have! Until I actually changed the way I was thinking and realized it doesn’t even matter where we shoot as long as we go about it the right way. The right angles and lighting are all you need to create amazing images.

Parking lots? Dirt fields? No problem!

Lets take a look at some examples! All of these images were taken less than a few minutes walk from my house. There is a huge field filled with dirt mounds, weeds, overgrown bushes and too many annoying cacti that I may or may not have stepped on or backed up into too many times.

Pullback #1:

This first image was taken about an 20 minutes before sunset. Actually all these images were! It’s my absolute favorite time to shoot here; the warm desert light is just amazing. I placed my subject (my ever so wonderful daughter!) in the weeds, the tall dead grass. It was January after all! I walked back a little ways and crouched down around the grass myself. Shooting through the grass gives the illusion that she is surrounded by tall thick, albeit dead, grass but you can tell by the pullback image that she is not in fact surrounded.

Pullback #2:

This second set is actually one of my favorites! I was out walking my dog and came across these two greenish trees/bushes that had recently been cut down and dumped. My son’s friend was over so I quickly grabbed her and we walked back out to the bush. Luckily she’s a super fashionista and dresses like she’s headed to a photoshoot everyday. I placed her in position so the sun was just peeking over the top of the bushes and then positioned myself laying down in the dirt so I was mostly at her level shooting up slightly to allow the sun to give that beautiful flare over the top.

Pullback #3:

This third set is my daughter again and this medium sized tree is in our back yard. I’d noticed for a few evenings how absolutely beautiful the light was back there right before the sun dips behind the mountains. I placed her in the bush and positioned myself to get just the right amount of sunlight on the back of her hair.

Pullback #4:

The forth set here, I forgot to take a pullback that evening so the sun is in a different place for the pullback image. But, she was placed in front of the weeds and I had her crouch down to allow the beautiful backlight to filter through the weeds and bushes which gives us the illusion of a beautiful background. The pullback clearly tells another story!

Pullback #5:

Set 5 is the same dirt field as the first. Same story :) I placed her in the long grass, and crouched myself down opposite her with the sun behind her.

Pullback #6:

Set 6 is pretty much the same story as set two! I was out walking my dog and noticed this little patch of weeds with flowers growing in them. Remember this is the big dirt field by my house so to have something pretty growing there was pretty darn exciting for me! I asked my subject to sit down among the weeds which she did because she is a rock star! I positioned myself so the sun was coming nicely over the bushes behind her which allowed for some beautiful sun flare.

So you see, even where there is not beauty, there is beauty. You just maybe have to lay in the dirt to see it!
