Canon EOS R6 Review

In this review of the Canon EOS R6, we will take a closer look at this mirrorless camera and compare it to others, such as the EOS R, EOS R5, and Nikon Z6 II. It is no secret that Canon’s launch of its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R, had a very mixed reception. While it demonstrated excellent image quality when paired with the new RF mount lenses, there wasn’t really anything about this camera that stood out, especially when compared to Sony’s top offerings. Featuring a single SD memory card slot, no in-body image stabilization, and a touch bar that most people ended up disliking, the Canon EOS R felt like an experiment rather than a serious photography tool. Things changed drastically with the launch of the EOS R5 and R6. Canon went back to its classic ergonomic design, added a boatload of new features, and significantly improved autofocus performance, addressing all of the issues of the original EOS R.

The Elements of Photography

I was consumed by the technical aspects of photography during the early days of my career in photography. Getting a sharp image was all that I had in mind. “Which shutter speed should I use to capture birds in flight? Which ISO will give me images with less noise? What aperture will give me a creamy background with a sharp subject? What are the recommended auto-focus settings?”. These cliché questions were the only ones running through my mind most of the time.

A noiseless picture is something that photographers have sought after for ages. A decade ago, it was the limitations with ISO performance of sensors that made high ISO noise a formidable foe. Even with the latest mirrorless cameras where photographers today are able to push the limits of low-light performance, noise reduction via post-processing software still stays as an integral part of the workflow. Photoshop always had multiple built-in options for noise reduction, and there are also plenty of third-party noise-reduction plugins available as well.
