Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Field Review

It’s been five long years since Nikon debuted the Z system, and now the Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR is finally here. Over the years, Nikon has steadily added to their supertelephoto lineup, with excellent lenses like the Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 and f/2.8, 600mm f/4, 800mm f/6.3, and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6. But a less expensive option was missing. That’s a big reason why the Nikon Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3 VR, with a launch price of $ 1700, was so highly anticipated. Today, I’m eager to share my first impressions of this lens with you.

Photography News: iPhone 15, Major Shimoda Backpack Sale

This week, I did one of my favorite hikes in Colorado – one which goes to a beautiful high-alpine lake with stunning mountain views. Unfortunately, it was so foggy at the top that I couldn’t see a thing! Instead of going home empty-handed, I thought about some alternative compositions that might make use of the fog. I wasn’t planning to take a picture like this, but it turned out better than I hoped. Isn’t it fun when you come back with a photo that you hadn’t expected? On that note, let’s take a look at this week’s news in the photography world, including both the expected and the unexpected.

Composing Upside Down and Backwards

Before I started shooting with large format film, something that almost scared me away is that composition on these cameras is completely backwards. It’s also upside down. And I’m not talking in metaphors – the image on the ground glass, used for composition, is totally opposite from the real world.

London with Seth Miranda and Nikon School!

A brand new Portrait Masterclass in London that will be a blast! Not only returning to London and working with the esteemed crew of Nikon School UK, but now Seth Miranda (aka LastXWitness) is coming over! A 2-day masterclass (November 23-24, 2023) and it is filling fast. Beautiful location, terrific models, small class. Great supply of Profoto lighting. Prelim zoom meet to sort out questions prior to the shooting days. Critique, discussion, lighting strategies, live shoots, lots of help. Did I mention it’s a small class?

I’ve always maintained the best thing about being a photographer is the encounters you have and the people you meet, many of whom become dear friends. Neil Freeman and Ricci Chera, who run the Nikon School operation in London, and Annie Cahill and I will have a reunion in London and always look forward to it. We’ll also gather again with Amber Tutton, who over the years has become a member of our studio family, always gracefully and beautifully posing for the camera.

Had a great time last year!

And the fun twist this year is we will teach together with another good friend and wonderful photographer, Seth Miranda, the original LastXWitness. Seth is so adept at all manner of tech and lighting it boggles the brain. We make a great team teaching together. (Plus, as you might gather from the pic below, we can be more than a little goofy.)

Gonna be a hoot, and super instructional thanks to teaming up with Seth, lots of real-time shooting, amazing models and Profoto gear to explore and use. Thank you Nikon UK!
