Due to the erratic nature of fireworks, the best settings to use when photographing them is the bulb shutter speed and manual exposure mode – since you can’t properly time and calculate the right exposure for the entire frame at once, or easily anyway. The bulb shutter speed allows the shutter to remain open as long as the shutter release is activated. The easiest way to do this is with a tripod and remote shutter release so you don’t get blurred images. Simply point the camera where the fireworks are, be sure to get a remote that works with the bulb shutter speed (some do not allow this), set a small aperture like f/11, time the explosions and hold the shutter open for 4 to 8 seconds each time. If you don’t have a remote, or can’t get one in time, you’ll have to depress the shutter yourself. Do so very carefully. Having a tripod is a MUST, and will make things easier for if you do not have a remote to activate the shutter. This requires trial and error and is not as easy as it is explained here. But the only way to do it is to get out and try.
