Tatooine? Nah, Vegas!

On the occasion of the longest day of the year, I look out my window and remember I am, physically, anyway, on earth. Mentally, that’s a whole other story.

But there is only one sun gracing/savaging our planet right now, and for that we can be thankful, ’cause if there were two, our long, tortured march towards becoming a cinder in the ether would become much more of a sprint. I digress.

There are two suns in the banner picture. One is the sun, and the other is a Profoto 2400WS Pro unit. (Big news today from Profoto, as they have debuted a piece of gear we have always wanted, an updated air remote called the Pro Connect. A wonderful evolution in control and connectivity.)

And Claudia, radiant in a hand-made Brazilian Samba outfit, anchors the picture, standing there in raw light. No shapers. Just a light blast from the 2400 pack.

Very different light from our first encounter, a year or so prior to the mirrors, also in a desert, this one in Peru. I was greeted with soft light in the sky and had to match it. Hence a Profoto B1X into a 5′ Octa soft box. ( As a general rule, the light on the earth should match the light in the sky, lest there be a disturbance in the force.)

Two deserts. Same subject. Very different light! And level of effort. The boat was there for me. I suspect it’s still there. The mirror set had to be painstakingly constructed. Thanks to Claudia for being amazing in front of the camera, and to La Casa Films, who introduced us. And to Lynn DelMastro, who runs production in our studio, from a set with two suns to a beat-up boat on the shore. And to Nikon, who creates the opportunities and the tools to go into the field with adventures in mind, and camera in hand.

Happy summer to all! May the sun shine on your day.
