I want to learn more about the manual settings on my canon digital slr rebel xti. is there any rules of thumb that I need to know?

Yes but to really understand what the rules of thumb is, your best bet is to read the owners manual which explains the rules of thumb and a lot more. After you will be amazed how good a photographer you are.

    Small f/stop, large opening in iris (the thing that allows light into the camera) large f/stop, small opening.

    f/stop determines “depth of field” the degree of focused area beyond the subject.

    I suggest that you buy and read a basic photography book or the manual that came with the camera.
