I love reportage and photo-journalism. However, I’m very shy when it comes to asking people if I could take their photograph!
How do you approach people and how do you go about asking them?
I thought about talking to them first and all, but where I live people look at you funny and if someone randomly asked me if they could take my picture i’d say no!

Just explain yourself and what you had in mind for the photo. Showing them the picture afterwards and offering to give it to them if it’s nice might be a good gesture also. Just try to give the general impression you or your intentions aren’t shady.
