Digital SLR Camera Photography – Moving From Snapshots to Photography

If you have been toying with the idea of buying a Digital SLR camera, the market is ready for you. Over the last five years the price of digital SLRs have decreased considerably and the quality of the pictures has increased in the same proportion. Digital SLR camera photography takes your photos to the next level, beyond what you can do with a compact camera. It will provide you all you need to unleash your creativity and control the end results. While a SLR may increase the probability your photos are good it still depends on the person pushing the shutter button.

If you are undecided the following features of an SLR may help understand what a digital SLR can offer you.

With a digital SLR camera photo composition is entirely within your control. You can choose to shoot in automatic mode or choose to take total control of the creative areas of f-stops and aperture selection. As you become more confident and capable you will be able to push your camera to the limit.

The beauty of having a digital SLR is that you can experiment to your hearts content. The pictures cost nothing to develop and you can evaluate the photos you have taken on your computer screen, printing them out if you want.

The digital SLR will also allow you to get the benefit of a good zoom lens or specialist lens such as fish-eye or portraits lenses. This is not usually possible on a compact camera and lenses open up a whole new world. As well as lenses the use of filters on those lenses can add a professional touch not possible with your point and shoot.

Similarly accessories such as proper flash units and stable tripods can only help improve the conditions in which your photos are taken.

Your photos taken in challenging conditions are likely to be better with a Digital SLR.

The lens size means they cope better in low light conditions and are able to process fast shoots much better. Speed is particularly important if you want to photograph sporting events, animals and sometimes children.

And what you see through the viewfinder of your SLR will be the picture you get. This is because the image being captured to your digital media card is reflected via a mirror through to the viewfinder. With a compact camera your viewfinder is the area the camera is pointing towards, but not necessarily the image that will be produced.

So by choosing a Digital SLR camera your photo creativity is likely to improve. There is always a place for compact cameras and even professionals carry a point and shoot for various circumstances. But any photograph is only as good as its composition, and a fancy camera won’t make a bad photograph good – but it might make it better looking.
