Senior Photography
Many of Shakespeare’s sonnets grapple with the brute force of time: time steals youth, can bring sickness and sadness, and, eventually, will drag us all to an inevitable end. And yet, says Shakespeare, and yet–my art can make you new again, can make you live with a vitality that cannot be dimmed, with a force that cannot be dulled with time.
And that ability to indelibly preserve the sense of someone–in all their sweetness, in all their confidence–is what is so compelling about photographic portraits.
Take, for example, the essence of senior photography. A successful photographic session can capture the unique position in which the senior stands, poised as he or she is between the finite world of school experiences and its wisdom, and the expansive world of possibilities awaiting them after graduation. As a way to look back, a senior portrait provides an emotional touchstone for parents after this child has left the nest, but it also is documentation for that senior’s future children: “See? I was that good looking when I was younger!” Senior photography can also sum up an individual’s interests and accomplishments, but it’s certainly more than a catalogue. A senior’s portrait paints a personality, and captures verve, openness, mystery. With photos taken at the height of a senior’s powers, senior photography is as close to documenting super heroes in pixels as exists on planet Earth.
Family photography, on the other hand, is an investment in family unity and stability and–dare I say it?–family bliss. Because family photography can create what becomes a visual anchor for every family member, a family’s portrait serves as a tangible reminder that, even in the day-to-day struggle to keep moving along, there is a greater purpose to this effort. And that greater purpose of building a strong family can subsequently make each family member stronger, and better able to face challenges with resiliency. As fluid and limited as childhood is, family photography also serves a vital archival role in a family’s history. A family’s portrait celebrates the group even as it captures the uniqueness of each family member at a given point in time.
Baby photography is definitely about celebration and joy, but also conveys softness and possibility. In portraits ranging from infants to toddlers, the work of baby photography captures not only the physical features, but trust, curiosity, a healthy dose of charm, and, eventually, a blossoming personality. Children have a hunger to know what they looked like when younger, and a professional portrait helps them understand just how valued they are. Grandparents likewise have a hunger for images of those whom they love. And baby photography enables you too to make crystalline the key memories you have of your child–just here, just now–before those memories slip away in the rapids of life.
