Fuji X-T50 and XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 Announced

A few hours before the Spring 2024 Fujifilm X Summit commences, Fuji has announced a number of major new products! For X-series users, the biggest news is the X-T50. This lightweight, 40-megapixel camera succeeds the previous X-T30 II. Also announced is a new advanced kit lens: the Fuji XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 lens. The camera and lens will ship June 17th for $ 1400 and $ 700 respectively, or $ 1800 if purchased together.

Fuji GFX 100S II and GF 500mm f/5.6 Announced

Continuing today’s series of announcements, Fujifilm has just announced a pair of exciting products for their medium format users. The new GFX 100S II camera offers a 100-megapixel sensor and a variety of new features for $ 5000. Then there’s Fuji’s longest medium format lens yet – the $ 3500 GF 500mm f/5.6, roughly equivalent to a 400mm lens on full-frame. Both of these products look very promising, and you’ll be hearing more from Libor shortly; he already had a chance to test them in the field for wildlife photography! For now, I’ll introduce them to you briefly.

Canon EOS R1 Development Announced

In a relatively slim press release, Canon has confirmed that they are indeed developing an EOS R1 flagship camera, aimed for a 2024 release. It will have a new image processing system (DIGIC Accelerator) that Canon says will improve the camera’s autofocus and other functions. The new subject-tracking capabilities in particular sound very interesting, especially the ability of the camera to recognize important subjects with “Action Priority.”

Photography News: Upcoming Fuji X Summit, Canon Sale

This is the eye-like mosaic on the wings of the Owl Butterfly (genus Caligo). How long did such an adaption take to occur? And what did it cost? Over countless generations, unfathomably many butterflies were eaten by predators before the pattern you see below arose. Maybe it feels like you’ve been waiting eons for cameras like the Canon R1 or Nikon Z6 III to appear, but it’s nothing by comparison. While we wait, let’s see what has evolved in the photography ecosystem over the past week.
