There aren’t a lot of photographers who have used every Nikon Z lens. And actually, I’m not one of them – I still need to test two, the Nikon Z 58mm f/0.95 Noct and the newest Z 35mm f/1.4. But I have tested 38 of the 40 (plus both TCs), and by now, I’ve settled on my favorites and least favorites of the bunch. I’ll share those with you today.

At times, wildlife photography can feel strictly descriptive: a bird on a stick, a giraffe on the savannah, a butterfly on a flower, and so on. Nothing wrong with that – most of the photos I take fall into that category. Still, when I can, I try to find moments that tell more of a story of the animal. Humor is one of the best, and least expected, tools to do so. But if you keep your eyes open and your mind cheerful, opportunities to make you laugh will surely come your way as a wildlife photographer.

Photography is like farming. You can’t just enjoy the sweet fruits – if you want to harvest, you have to sow. For a wildlife photographer, this means getting to know the habits of nearby animals. One way to learn about them is to use a photo trap to study their behavior. This is one of the topics I am currently working on for you. And since I took my most recent photo this way, I’ll open this week’s photography news with a trail camera photo of a doe.

And although green vegetation is always welcome after harsh winters, lively plants can complicate bird photography. Grass and leaves can sometimes be overpowering in their distracting randomness and in their crazy effects on background blur.

The Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 and the Tamron Z 150-500mm f/5-6.7 are currently the two longest telephoto zoom lenses available natively for the Z mount. Because of this, they will likely appeal to a similar type of photographer, and it’s easy to wonder which one is right for you.
