How to Capture Good Foregrounds in Landscape Photography 

Not a lot of foregrounds accomplish what I want them to do in landscape photography. Maybe that’s why I don’t take a lot of classic-style landscape photos with a big, obvious foreground layered in front of the background. But I do still constantly think about finding good foregrounds as a landscape photographer, and it goes without saying that your choice of foreground can make or break a photo. I hope this article sheds a little bit of light on what makes good foregrounds and how to capture them in landscape photography.

As I write this opening paragraph, I’m sitting on a train, looking out at the flooded landscape around the tracks. Just a few dozen kilometers further north, floodwater is rushing through the towns and villages. Streets have become raging rivers, houses have become islands. How helpless and vulnerable we humans are when we try to resist the force of a mighty current. Yet, what is an extremely inhospitable environment for us is home to the Torrent Duck. This duck can face the roaring current with ease and grace. If only we humans could do the same.
