Photography News: Approaching the Holiday Deal Season

By the time this Photography News has been published, I will be wrapping up a lecture here in Prague on photographing Sri Lanka. If you missed it, not to worry – many of the photos and stories will find their way into the pages of Photography Life in the future. Why do I mention this? Sometimes a looming deadline forces us to dive into our archives. Just yesterday, I found myself culling a number of shots that had been gathering digital dust since I took them. Depth of Field and Storytelling in Portrait Photography

One of the most important decisions made when taking a portrait is how much depth of field (DoF) to have in your image. This is because what is included and in focus in your image plays a large role in the storytelling of the photo. Today, I’d like to explore the factors that contribute to DoF, and especially the storytelling impact of a shallow versus a deep DoF. I’ll also discuss what I have been gravitating toward in my own work.

Four Sigma Lenses for Canon RF Have Arrived

It wasn’t just Sony that had a big day yesterday! Sigma also announced the arrival of four APS-C lenses for the Canon RF mount: a 16mm f/1.4, 23mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.4. These fast prime lenses bring the total number of Sigma RF lenses up to six – all APS-C so far.
