Photography News: Nikon Sues Viltrox, Nikon Z 120-300mm f/2.8 Rumor

The third week of January was rather modest when it came to photography news (unlike the news from the outside world). In keeping with that, I chose a similarly understated opening image for today’s article. At first glance, there appears to be nothing particularly interesting in this photo. I found it while going through my photos from Ecuador to update our article Best Nikon Lenses for Wildlife Photography… and looking at the thumbnail, I found myself wondering whether I had accidentally pressed the shutter. Yet, this seemingly empty image does contain a living creature—one perfectly adapted, through its cryptic coloration, to an environment full of sharp beaks, curved talons, and pointed teeth. Can you spot it?

Viltrox AF 9mm f/2.8 Air Field Review

When I hold one of Nikon’s APS-C cameras in my hand, I immediately think how well it would pair with a small prime. And although we’ve seen a couple of small primes from Nikon so far, like the Nikon Z DX 24mm f/1.7, we are lacking them at many useful focal lengths. So, I was quite excited to do a quick field test of the Viltrox AF 9mm f/2.8 Air APS-C lens for Nikon Z, which is also available for Sony E and Fuji X.

Photography News: Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Announcement, M4/3 Sales

Although photography speaks a clear and easily understood language, it is utterly silent — a balm for the soul in today’s noise-saturated world. Still, there are moments when I wish I could turn up the volume on an imaginary dial. This rarely happens when I look at a photograph of a person, but quite often when the subject is a bird — just like the Choco Toucan in the image below. Its open bill and the way its entire body is positioned suggest that it is filling a stretch of cloudforest with sound, and yet you hear nothing. This week, I wrote an article about that situation. But right now, let’s give voice to the photography news that surfaced this week.
