5 Inspiring ways to create gorgeous macro photography

Spring is such a perfect time to practice macro photography!

The weather is finally warming up for many of us and we can get outside, enjoy some sunshine, and look for blooms and signs of new life.

Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks for macro photography, along with gorgeous illustrative images from the fabulous alumni of my Art of Macro Photography workshop.

1. Keep your eyes open.

My favorite tip may be the most obvious but it’s worth stating. When shooting macro, always keep your eyes open for new opportunities and subjects.

This is a time to really slow down and take in all the beauty in the tiny details around you. You may have an idea of what you want to capture when you set-out to shoot, but sometimes the most interesting and exciting photo opportunities come from the most spontaneous subjects!

If you are open-minded, keep observing, and stay curious, you will be amazed at what you may find.

2. Pay attention to your background.

This could mean making sure you have a simple background without distractions or it could mean finding or creating a really interesting and beautiful background. The point is that it isn’t just your subject that makes the image work.

Take the time to decide if the background adds visual interest to your photograph or if it is distracting from your intended subject. Don’t be afraid to move things to new locations. The background can totally make or break your image!

3. Experiment with color.

Utilizing color theory is one of the best ways to add interest to your macro images. Consider how the combinations of colors in your photograph will work together to create something beautiful and interesting.

I love to think about how my background color will look with my subject color. Complementary color and monochromatic color schemes are a couple of my favorite options for macro photography.

4. Shoot the unexpected.

You will be amazed at how macro photography can make mundane objects, or even dead foliage, seem utterly exquisite. The joy of macro photography is that it gives us a glimpse of things that aren’t readily visible to the naked eye.

Don’t limit yourself to obvious subjects like flowers. Sometimes the things that we might consider to be “ugly” are the subjects that are the most fascinating up close.

5. Change your perspective.

I don’t use a tripod for macro photography because I want to be able to move around and shoot from all different angles. Shoot from above, below and to the side of your subject. Observe how the light and background changes as you move around and see if you find something that works.

Try to think outside of the box and shoot from new perspectives and angles.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Camera Review

Sony Xperia XZ2

Without a doubt, the photography industry has been shaken by the rise of smartphone photography. The highly competitive market of smartphones has also been overrun by many options from a variety of different manufacturers. The Android platform dominates smartphone sales, having a whopping 87% market share – an impressive number when compared to the 12% that iOS represents. With Android being an open platform compared to iOS, it attracts many manufacturers from all over the world, including Sony. While Sony has recently become a popular choice among photographers, thanks to its appealing mirrorless cameras, the company has been making smartphones for much longer, with its Xperia line dating all the way back to 2008. And considering that the company also holds a large market share in digital camera sensor manufacturing (most smartphones today use Sony-made sensors), it is understandable why it wants to continue playing its part in the smartphone industry. After-all, the smartphone is what the majority of people around the world use today to capture their day-to-day moments. I recently had a chance to test the Sony Xperia XZ2 and wanted to share my impressions about this smartphone’s camera capabilities with our readers.

Commuting with a Camera

Railroad-Tracks-After-Rain

I suspect that a lot of landscape and cityscape photographers, like myself, are not always able to devote the time necessary to wait for atmospheric conditions and astral bodies to be in that “ideal” position for the image you have in mind. Some of the early landscape masters were known to camp out for days waiting for all the variables to line up just so. The realities of needing to make a living and driving to and from work five days a week can, with minimal effort, be transformed into an approximate equivalent to an extended wait for the elements to align.

The Rise and Rise of Smartphone Photography

Smartphones Automatically Finding the Best Composition

Smartphones have come a long way. Over the last few years, the improvements made in smartphone photography have been huge, culminating in the powerhouses on the market toda,y such as the Google Pixel 2, the iPhone X, and the Samsung Galaxy S9. My current handset, the Samsung S7 Edge, can take great-looking photos and even performs pretty well in low light, and this model is now over 2 years old! But despite it being a capable piece of photography kit, I rarely find myself using my S7 camera app for anything more than snapping an amusing piece of graffiti, or to show something to a friend. Then again, I also own 2 dedicated cameras.
