What to Photograph When There’s Nothing to Photograph

I’m on the annual Photography Life fall colors workshop with Nasim, and our group ran into a tricky photographic situation this morning. A beautiful mountain overlook was completely blocked by clouds at sunrise, ruining any photos we had in mind. Time to pack it up and go home? Not quite.

Ultra-Large Format Cameras: When 300mm Is a Wide Lens

There’s no real upper limit to how large a camera sensor or film can be. “Full frame” cameras are smaller than medium format digital, which itself falls behind most medium format film – and so on. At the high end of the scale are Ultra-Large Format (ULF) film cameras.

September in Washington, DC…..

Happy to be with a workshop group in Washington, DC. I have worked in Washington a lot, but it has always been on directed, specific assignments. Never have I been able to do a wander with a camera, which I will do this week.

Already wandered to The National Mall, and viewed the astonishing and tragic power of the over 600,000 flags placed on the mall, signifying the number of COVID deaths in the United States. Graphically beautiful, and utterly sad. These tiny flags, each representing a life lost, sweep across the mall.

We have a wonderful group, as always shepherded and directed by the tireless duo of Liza Politi and Ari Espay, of Fancy Girl Street Boy Productions. We are like family, along with our participants, and we’ll shoot and critique, shoot and critique all week long here in our nation’s capitol.

It’s a wonderful time of the year to be here. The air is slightly tinged with fall. And there are pictures to be made, even now, still in the time of COVID.

For years, Lightroom’s tools for selective adjustments left something to be desired. The “detect edges” feature often adds noise to soft areas like clouds, whereas the standard brush and gradient tools can affect too much of the image. Range masking fixes those problems.
