The renowned documentary photographer Josef Koudelka noted in his diaries “A good photograph is a miracle – and not many of them happen.” And what is a good photograph, according to him? “A good photograph is the one that gets into your brain, the one you don’t forget, the one that gets better and better over time.” On the subject of memory (all right, this one is a bit of a stretch) here are some memorable pieces of news for the week!

At the beginning of May, I travelled to southeastern Arizona on a wildlife photography trip. This is one of the southernmost areas of the United States. Thanks to its dry desert environment, the species here are quite different than those found in many other parts of North America. The past several years haven’t been kind to the 1.5x crop sensor camera. Other than Fuji, every major manufacturer of aps-c cameras has shifted their focus toward full frame. Canon’s most recent aps-c camera was their M50 Mark II in October 2020; Sony’s newest (late-2019) a6100 and a6600 have already been soft-discontinued; only Nikon has released something in the last year with the Zfc, which is broadly the same as 2019’s Z50 but with retro styling. So, fans of aps-c should be heartened to see Canon’s new announcement of the EOS R7 and EOS R10 – plus two crop-sensor lenses – for the EOS R mirrorless system.
