Photography News: The Longest Leica SL Lens, WPPI 2023 Sales

Return from paradise. Those are a few words to describe my day yesterday. I left behind the breathtaking nature of Colombia and its lovely people and returned to pre-spring Europe, lovely in its own way. (I will now be able to answer your comments that have been piling up under my articles, and for which I have so rudely kept you waiting.)

The Laughing Kookaburra: Decisive Moments in Wildlife Photography

The term “decisive moments” is usually associated with the famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. His domain was photographing the everyday life of the French streets with his Leica and 50mm lens. An all-manual film camera is not exactly suited to action photography. To capture the decisive moment required anticipation, practice, and a bit of luck.

Pergear 14mm f/2.8 Field Test: Ultrawide and Fast, on a Budget

Pergear’s 14mm f/2.8, full-frame lens is a very interesting option for Sony, Nikon, Canon, and Leica mirrorless photographers. After all, it reaches wide and bright, yet costs under $ 300. But can it really deliver? I tested this budget ultra-wide in the field, and here’s what I found.

A New Flash Workshop in Las Vegas!

Heading to a favorite place, Las Vegas, next month. Will do a lighting workshop with a spin, and the seriously wonderful spin is the deeply talented, experienced, and amazing performers we will photograph. Viva Las Vegas Workshop!

Thrilled to be working again with Joli Irvine, and her equally wondrous sister, Alexi, both of whom bring extraordinary grace and physicality to the lens. Veterans of a number of Vegas shows (they are in Awakening, the new show at the Wynn) and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, both of them, along with numerous other talented artists, will gather for our workshop in a variety of locations. The extraordinary duo below, Wayne and Kat, will also be working with us!

Joli will be our “talent wrangler” for the week, as she knows a wide range of performers and has unique resources that we can draw from. And we’ll offer a twist! She will be a guest lecturer for our photographers to start the week.

In most workshops, you’re assigned a model and you get some time to work together, and that process works just fine. But it struck me given Joli’s experience in front of the camera, that it would be enormously helpful if she sat down and talked to all of us about what the talent needs most from the eye and mind behind the camera. Direction, to be sure, but also connection, dialogue, and an ongoing commitment to excellence of craft and a clear-eyed view of what the creative destination of the picture might be.

Alexi and Joli combine forces to produce (in addition to being onstage nightly) a wonderful health and fitness advisory called The Wellness Blend. Along with Mike Cali, our former crew chief, on a visit to Joli’s house, we sampled her patented, healthy oatmeal breakfast. Have not had oatmeal that tasty since.

Revving up for a deep dive into lighting, portraiture, location strategies and overall camera skills in the glamorous and energetic setting of Las Vegas!
