how do I make a high resolution picture into a lower resolution?

Question by JordanMR: how do I make a high resolution picture into a lower resolution?
I’ve got a really nice picture at an insanely high resolution. The resolution is so high that it doesn’t display very well as my background (Windows Vista). How can I reduce the actual size of this photo (without cropping portions of it out) from 3566×2232 to something more manageable like 1440×900? Is this even possible? Is this the best solution?

I am NOT looking for general photography tips. Do not give them to me.

Straightforward answers appreciated.

The image ratio is pretty much the same, so you could resize this without losing much of your picture. Use Photoshop or related software to crop and specify 1440×900 as your size. You can probably do this with Gimp or Picnik or some other free software or website.

If you can’t figure this out, maybe you can e-mail it to me at swf08302 at comcast.net and I’ll do it for you. It will take about 5 seconds.
