When you take a photo of your model, sometimes direct lighting may not be the best option for their lighting. We always hear about photographers searching for controlled and directed light, however this may not be the best solution for your subject. Instead, your primary aim should be to minimize shadowing, which is especially true for portrait shoots that are aimed at promoting a product such as colored contact lenses or make up.
To grab the perfect shot, try placing your subjects in a room away from the window, where bright lights can cause part of their face to form ugly shadows across their cheeks due to their nose. Place them in a position that is facing away from the light, so it is distributed evenly from behind the subject. Remember, their face may not be darker, so you will need a fast lens to capture more light. It is ok to use some flash, but even the slighted reflection that causes shine on their nose and cheeks will draw attention away from the important features such as their eyes.
If you have overhead lighting, then it pays to diffuse this source, as it will remove any reflection in their eyes. In many close up shots, especially of the eyes, the reflection that can be seen over the iris can be distracting to look at, and should best be minimized. If you do not have a dedicated diffuser, then a cloth to cover the light will also work wonders. If you have no access to reach the ceiling, then try adding reflectors under their face, to even out the shadows and give them a more even tone across their forehead and also their chin.
Without going into details, post processing can also play a big part in the final product. If your niche is in natural photography, then many will argue that no processing is required. However, in most cases, some subtle saturation or sharpening is required to either even out their pores or remove any unwanted shine from their skin.
