Question by Mike S: What are the best camera settings for taking pictures of structures under water from above water?
So I have my fancy new camera but I’m still not the best at understanding aperture and shutter speed etc.
I often go kayaking in very clear lakes and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any resources or general guidelines for taking pictures of submerged objects from the surface?

If your eye can see it, the camera can record it.
If clarity is your goal, then here are a few hints:
1. Use a polarizer to help remove reflections.
2. Use a lens hood to help remove glare and flare.
3. Remember light bounces like a billiard ball off a bumper, so keep bright objects at an angle to the lens and darker stuff behind the object.
4. The higher the angle of shooting, generally the cleaner your shot.
5. Forget the above and buy a refurbished Nikonos and stick the camera under water. For the cost of a good Nikonos, you can buy a plastic housing or bag for your existing camera. If your camera is in a kayak, you should want to protect it anyway. Just do an internet search using camera + housing + water and you’ll find a lot of stuff.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
