How To Take Good Pictures

The key for how to take good pictures is not in your camera, your equipment, or any of that. It’s in your way of viewing the world. Compositional techniques are great for improving your photos, however, don’t just use them when taking pictures. Here are some simple compositional rules:

Avoiding The Center

Taking pictures that are off center can make for much more interesting shots

Use Lines

Using the lines of your photo to add impact to the subject can make photos more appealing

Isolate the Subject

A simple photo of one subject is better than a confusing shot of a hundred subjects.

Now, these are the only compositional techniques I’m going to cover right now. Rather than just use these techniques with your camera you are going to use them when you walk around the world.

When you look at a building, for example, try to make the lines around you lead to the subject. Try moving your head so the subject is off center. Try getting closer, moving higher, lower, etc and seeing what it does to the way the object looks to you.

The camera is simply a tool for capturing what you present in front of it. If you know how to look at things and make them look amazing with your eyes alone, imagine how great you’ll be able to take photos.

So I want you to go outside and take some pictures…with your eyes! This sounds strange but it’ll really strengthen your skills as a photographer.
