I have a Nikon G10 and when I turn the shutter speed up I find that my images get much darker.

You are underexposing your shots. You need to use a larger aperture or higher ISO to compensate for the higher shutter speeds. Proper exposure is a balance between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. A change to one requires a corresponding change to one of the others.
For example let say you took a photograph at F2.8, shutter speed of 1/125 of a second at ISO 100.
If you needed a faster shutter speed your exposure would be
F1.4, 1/250th of a second at ISO 100 or
F2.8, 1/250 at ISO 200
If you needed 1/500 your exposure would be F1.4, 1/500 at ISO 200 or F2.8, 1/500 at ISO 400.
