What’s a good Digital SLR camera for a beginning portrait photographer?

Question by Kayte: What’s a good Digital SLR camera for a beginning portrait photographer?
I want a camera that’s under $ 700 That will take great portraits. I’m going to take photography classes in the fall, so I’d like a better camera. Meanwhile I’ve been taking portraits for people with a point & shoot. I’d prefer Nikon or Canon, but preferably Canon. Any photography tips are appreciated also!

Hold on a little.

Yes for under $ 700 you can buy an excellent Nikon D40 with a 18-55 mm and 50 mm f/1.4, but before you get too carried away you may want to spend some time assisting a portrait photographer and get a handle on the type and number of lights you will need as well as backgrounds. While $ 700 may buy you that camera and lens you need to shoot portraits, the other gear may well cost you much more.

When I was in school, I interned with a portrait and product photographer at his studio near my school. I spend a lot of time setting up his lights for different kinds of portraits and products. I learned a lot about lighting and what equipment was good and what brands to avoid.
