Question by ohjirosan: What is the best way to photograph metal objects?
I work in a machine shop, and I need to photograph all of our machined parts for our records. These parts are mostly stainless steel, but I am not sure what the best way to photograph them is. I was thinking of making a small ‘do it yourself’ light box, but I don’t know if that will work well with metal. Does anyone know of any good ways to photograph metal?

Stainless steel is highly reflective and a diffuse light like a softbox is a great idea.
The main problem is to try to avoid direct reflection from the metal to your camera.
I suggest you learn about the “family of angles” concept. Basically, you will learn how to place your light in order to avoid those reflections.
A good place to start is Fil Hunter’s excellent book, Light, Science and Magic.
It will show you everything you need about those difficult situations and how to use your light to reveal shape and texture.
