Keep your shutter speed high – that’s pretty obvious!
The Pros do this using fast lenses with wide aperture, but your focus then has to be absolutely bang on. If this is your first time shooting sports I would suggest that you try to use an aperture that is more forgiving on on your focusing skills, say f8 even if that means you get some motion blur in say fast moving feet of arms.
Other tips,
1. Get close, there’s a reason that the pros are on the sidelines with enormous lenses! If your taking pictures at a local event, talk to the organizers. Let them know what you are doing and see how close they’ll let you get. Generally for professional sports you’ll be bound by the venues restrictions and limited to what you can get from the stands. If you have an SLR you may be able to rent a longer lens, so have a look at a couple of the links below, prices are quite reasonable.
2. Get in front of the players and capture expressions. Great sports photos convey emotion. Spend some time looking at professional images to get some ideas.
Hope this helps! Good luck.
