which camera settings for canon 580 ex flash on canon 5D, to get large depth of field ? i set 580 to ETTL
when i use with P, camera will tend to use large apertures, when i use AP then shutter will stay open too long. when i use M, manual setting i have to measure new distance every time, i or subject moves and set aperture accordingly, which works, but takes too long.

Actually, the manual mode on the camera is really the best for shooting with flash and with your fine 580 EX flash in the ttl mode (not manual) and putting the shutter speed to the sync setting or slower, your photos should come out perfectly.
On the 5D, the flash sync is 1/200th second. So, for instance, in the manual mode, set your shutter for 1/200th second or less and the aperture at say f/8. Then with your flash in the TTL mode, take a shot. You will know soon enough if you have to open the aperture more depending upon how far away from the subject you are. Generally, those settings are good from about 6 feet out to 15 or 20 feet
