Photographer Takes 23 Horizontal Images from Helicopter to Make Spectacular 360 Pano Image of San Diego

Photographer Jeff Morris, who shoots everything from drone and helicopter aerial photography to milky way long exposure photos, just completed an amazing 360 panoramic image of San Diego captured out the door of a helicopter. Taken 25 minutes after sunset, Jeff wanted to make a very wide, sweeping image of the city while in the sky.

“It was my first time in [a helicopter] and I had planned for this shot a few days before hand,” Jeff told us. “I used the Sony A7s with a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens. I choose that camera so I would have the ability to shoot higher ISO and still keep a high shutter speed to stop motion blur from the rotating copter.”

Jeff had the helicopter pilot try and remain as still as possible during the shoot, hovering neatly in place as Jeff captured his shots. “I asked [the pilot] to try and stay in the same place and rotate left slowly. I ended up taking 23 horizontal images to get the full 360 degree image.”

Using a combination of Lightroom (specifically the new panoramic image feature) and Photoshop, Jeff was able to combine his images into one grand 360 degree view of the city:
